Karl Kirkaldy
It all started when my dad got me a Radio Shack guitar starter kit. I spent months in bed every night, playing The Star-Spangled Banner by Jimi Hendrix over and over, completely hooked. That summer, when I went tree planting, my mom gave me her old Yamaha acoustic — and that’s when everything changed. Music became my lifeline, helping me push through long days of planting thousands of trees and crashing onto cold, hard ground at night.
By my second season out there in the bush, I discovered something new — I could sing. That’s when I really started to express myself and feel the pure joy that playing music brings.
Fast forward to 2012, when I moved to Sechelt. Back then, music was more of a weekend thing. But one night around a campfire, my contractor at the time, John, started banging on a garbage bin, and I grabbed that same old Yamaha from my truck. We started jamming — and just like that, our band, Zonolite, was born. Through that band, I was lucky enough to discover the incredible community of musicians on the Coast, who welcomed me with open arms.
Now, when I play my solo sets, I get to share the story of Zonolite — mixing rock, country, and pop covers with a few originals to show you exactly how much music means to me. It’s my way of bringing you along for the ride, from tree planting days to campfire jams to the stage today.
